Use Chinese Medicine Principles To Increase Your Fertility
I received this in an email recently from a lovely couple who both had fertility treatment with me. They wanted to share their story to encourage others on the fertility journey.
“I was tired of reading everyone else success stories that continually eluded us –and now I’m writing one! Seemed that miracles only happened to everyone else. We had been trying for over 3 years when I first visited Suzy. We had one miscarriage in that time but all tests showed no obvious reason why we shouldn’t be able to conceive naturally. But for us it wasn’t happening. We had cut out gluten and dairy and were taking a heap of pills from a naturopath. After seeing Suzy for about 8 months where she evened out my cycle and assisted my overall well-being she suggested that my husband repeated some of his earlier tests. His morphology had been low but we understood from our GP that natural conception could still happen with this result. To our surprise his sperm count was below the range it should be. His morphology was just inside the normal range. With a new focus and maybe a possible cause of our infertility we set to work.
He visited Suzy every fortnight for acupuncture. Suzy advised us on diet; what foods specifically weren’t helping my husband. We cut out sugar, alcohol, caffeine, fats and processed foods. Essentially our focus was veg, fruit, meat, nuts, grains yoghurt etc –organic where possible and as unprocessed as possible. We also focused on keeping really hydrated. To be honest it was a lifestyle overhaul that took us some adjusting to. We never knew so many things contained sugar. For example roast potato seasoning’s second biggest ingredient was sugar! Cutting out alcohol was another biggie. We never realised how much socialising for us went hand in hand with drinking. We usually drank alcohol when we were out with friends. It was hard to stick to our diet while being with friends that had no understanding of what we were going through. But one thing we found out is that your social life doesn’t stop, you can still enjoy the company of friends and family without alcohol. We both felt a strong sense of teamwork, supporting each other with diet choices every day.
For three full cycles we both focused on healthy eating and had regular acupuncture (my charted cycle was looking better and better too with our new eating habits).
Then after the third cycle I was pregnant! We repeated my husband’s sperm test and the count had increased 5x.
I’m now in my second trimester. All those years of disappointment and heartbreak dissipate once you see that little being and heartbeat on the on the ultrasound screen. Five years from when we began our journey our baby is due.
Our relationship with food has also changed, the realisation that what you choose to eat can have such impact on your body and it’s outcomes. A view that will have lifelong effects.”
